Microsoft Copilot
What is Microsoft Copilot?
Microsoft Copilot is the AI assistant Microsoft has built into Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and other 365 apps, for writing, summarising and searching.
Microsoft’s AI assistant is called Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft has renamed the Microsoft 365 Copilot app to Microsoft Copilot: one app for personal and work use. Licences and older documentation still use the name Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Copilot makes individual employees faster in the tools they already use: drafting an email, summarising a meeting, finding a document. It works with what you have in Microsoft 365. The difference between Copilot Chat and the paid licence, what Copilot costs and what it needs from your data and your team are covered in our guide to Microsoft 365 Copilot.
What Copilot does not do by itself is take over processes or connect data from systems outside Microsoft, such as your accounting or industry software. That takes integrations and often an AI agent.
Copilot finds everything an employee has view permission for. So get permissions in SharePoint and Teams in order before you roll it out, and agree how you work with it in an AI policy.
