Middleware
What is middleware?
Middleware is software that sits between your systems and translates, checks and passes on data, so applications can work together.
Where a direct integration connects two systems, middleware connects many at once through one layer. That layer translates formats, checks the data, records what was exchanged and catches errors when a system is briefly unavailable.
An iPaaS (integration platform as a service) is middleware in the cloud. Light options such as Zapier and Make are fine for single steps; with lots of data, exceptions or business-critical processes, an integration layer you fully own pays off.
