Business process management (BPM)

What is business process management (BPM)?

Business process management (BPM) is the structured practice of documenting, measuring and improving the processes in an organisation, so that work runs predictably, efficiently and in a controlled way.

Also known as BPMprocess managementbusiness process management

Process management looks at work as a chain of steps with a start, an end and an owner: from quote request to signed contract, from incoming invoice to payment. You describe how the chain runs, measure where it stalls and improve it step by step. The logical next step is taking the repetitive part out of that chain, which is what we do in AI automation.

Classic BPM works with process maps, often in BPMN notation, and with a cycle of design, execute, measure and improve. That remains useful, but many process maps describe how things should work rather than how they actually do. The exceptions, the retyping between systems and the waiting for a colleague rarely appear on them, yet that is where the time leaks away.

AI changes what you can do with a well-described process. Steps that used to be too variable for a fixed script, such as reading an email or assessing a document, can now be taken over by an AI agent, with a person on the decisions that matter. A clear process with an owner is therefore not paperwork but the best preparation for workflow automation. Where to start is covered under process optimisation.
