AI operating model
What is an AI operating model?
An AI operating model is the way an organisation is set up when AI carries out a fixed part of the work: which tasks AI does, who decides and which data and agreements underpin it.
It is the AI version of a target operating model. A classic operating model describes how people, processes and systems deliver value together. An AI operating model adds a new kind of executor: software that reads, decides within limits and finishes work.
That touches six building blocks at once: strategy and value, processes, people and roles, data and systems, governance and continuous development. Rolling out tools without designing those blocks leaves you with isolated pilots that never scale.
Not to be confused with an AI Operating System: that is the technical layer underneath that connects your data and systems. You design the operating model; you build the operating system.
