AI governance

What is AI governance?

AI governance is the set of agreements, roles and controls with which an organisation decides how AI is used, who is responsible and how risks are managed.

Also known as AI governanceresponsible AIAI oversight

In practice it means an AI policy, a register of AI applications, ownership per application, human oversight where needed and periodic review. It also helps with the obligations under the AI Act.

Governance does not have to be bureaucracy. For mid-sized organisations it often fits on a few pages and one fixed review per quarter.

AI governance is one of the six building blocks of an AI operating model.
